Still Lifes, Living Memories
The Art of Everyday Moments with Kiama Sophia
Where Art, Food and Universal Memory Meet
For artist Kiama Sophia, born in Perth and now based in Brussels, painting is an act of mindfulness. “Relaxed means contentment, being present and feeling at ease without trying to force anything,” she says. This pursuit of clarity is the soul of her work, which transforms ordinary moments—a shared meal, a café scene—into vibrant, lasting memories on canvas.
Kiama’s paintings, often inspired by food and connection, explore how personal moments can become universal. “I love that a painting from my own experience resonates with people worldwide,” she shares. “It’s empowering to know our most personal experiences are often shared.” Her work celebrates this common ground, capturing not just a tablescape, but the conversations and sensations that surround it.
Her move from Perth to Brussels was a turning point. The city’s dynamic and supportive art scene pushed her to dedicate herself fully to her practice. This new environment, coupled with her lifelong passion for both art and fashion, fuels a continuous creative dialogue. “Sometimes I wear a colour and unconsciously start painting with it,” she notes. “The two worlds are completely intertwined.”
Through bold colours and playful compositions, Kiama aims to ignite viewers' own memories. Her work is a gentle reminder of the joy found in life's simple pleasures and the shared humanity around a table. Kiama’s art does more than decorate a space; it serves as a poignant reminder to savour the present.
In a world that moves too fast, Kiama offers a visual pause—a chance to remember that within the simple, sensory rituals of our daily lives lies a deep, beautiful, and binding human connection. Her paintings are not just a record of her own moments, but an invitation to cherish ours.
